The Abysmal

坎

29. The Abysmal

kǎn; Danger

Judgment

Repeated danger. If you are sincere, you have success in your heart, and whatever you do succeeds. Like water flowing through danger without losing its nature.

Image

Water flows on uninterruptedly and reaches its goal: the image of the abysmal repeated. The noble person walks in lasting virtue and carries on the business of teaching.

Lines

  1. Line 1, yin (six)

Repetition of the abysmal: in the abyss one falls into a pit. Misfortune. Panic in crisis digs one deeper.

  2. Line 2, yang (nine)

The abyss is dangerous. One should strive to attain small things only. In crisis, secure small wins first.

  3. Line 3, yin (six)

Forward and backward, abyss on abyss; in danger like this, pause and wait, otherwise you fall into a pit. Do not act thus. When every move is risky, stay still and observe.

  4. Line 4, yin (six)

A jug of wine, a bowl of rice with it; earthen vessels simply handed in through the window. There is no blame in this. In crisis, simple and sincere communication works best.

  5. Line 5, yang (nine)

The abyss is not filled to overflowing; it is filled only to the rim: no blame. Not yet resolved, but stabilised.

  6. Line 6, yin (six)

Bound with cords and ropes, shut in between thorn-hedged prison walls: for three years one does not find the way. Misfortune. Departing from the right path creates long entrapment.

In the enterprise

The hexagram of crisis management, risk and resilience: financial distress, PR crises, compliance investigations, geopolitical risk. Core: sincerity and inner steadiness are the most valuable assets in crisis; 'repeated danger' means crisis rehearsal.

Psychological lens

Resonates with cognitive narrowing under stress and fight–flight–freeze responses; line 2 is the small-goals strategy of crisis intervention, line 4 the sincerity principle of crisis communication.
