Darkening of the Light

明夷

36. Darkening of the Light

míng yí; Light concealed

Judgment

In adversity it furthers one to be persevering. When the light is obscured, protect the inner light.

Image

The light has sunk into the earth: the image of darkening of the light. The noble person lives with the great mass: veiling their light, yet still shining.

Lines

  1. Line 1, yang (nine)

Darkening of the light during flight; he lowers his wings. The noble person on the way does not eat for three days; but he has somewhere to go, and the host has occasion to gossip. Leave a damaging environment in time, even at a cost.

  2. Line 2, yin (six)

Darkening of the light injures him in the left thigh. He gives aid with the strength of a horse: good fortune. Recover fast with outside help.

  3. Line 3, yang (nine)

Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south; their great leader is captured. One must not expect perseverance too soon. Remove the root cause, but reform step by step.

  4. Line 4, yin (six)

He penetrates the left side of the belly. One gets at the very heart of the darkening of the light, and leaves gate and courtyard. Having seen the truth, leave decisively.

  5. Line 5, yin (six)

Darkening of the light as with Prince Ji. Perseverance furthers. In a hostile power environment, endure, protect yourself, keep your principles.

  6. Line 6, yin (six)

Not light but darkness. First he climbed up to heaven, then he plunged into the depths of the earth. Those who darken the light destroy themselves.

In the enterprise

The hexagram of adversity, political risk and 'concealing one's light': hostile regulatory or political environments, hostile takeovers, toxic corporate politics, reputational damage. Core: 'veiling the light yet shining'—keep a low profile, preserve strength, stay lucid and principled inside.

Psychological lens

Resonates with emotion regulation under adversity and 'strategic silence'; Prince Ji (line 5) balances moral courage and self-protection; the top line describes the self-destruction of power (hubris and corruption).
