The Gentle

巽

57. The Gentle

xùn; Penetration

Judgment

Success through what is small. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. It furthers one to see the great person. Gentle influence that penetrates everywhere, like wind.

Image

Winds following one upon the other: the image of the gently penetrating. The noble person spreads their commands abroad and carries out their undertakings.

Lines

  1. Line 1, yin (six)

In advancing and in retreating, the perseverance of a warrior furthers. When dithering, decide like a soldier.

  2. Line 2, yang (nine)

Penetration under the bed. Priests and magicians are used in great number. Good fortune. No blame. Communicate through trusted experts to dispel doubts.

  3. Line 3, yang (nine)

Repeated penetration. Humiliation. Over-compromise loses your position.

  4. Line 4, yin (six)

Remorse vanishes. During the hunt three kinds of game are caught. A gentle strategy brings multiple gains.

  5. Line 5, yang (nine)

Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse vanishes. Nothing that does not further. No beginning, but an end. Before the change, three days; after the change, three days. Good fortune. The full protocol for changing orders: announce, execute, review.

  6. Line 6, yang (nine)

Penetration under the bed. He loses his property and his axe. Perseverance brings misfortune. Excessive humility loses authority and resources.

In the enterprise

The hexagram of influence, communication and policy roll-out: internal communication, change advocacy, market penetration, soft power, government relations. 'Spread commands abroad': policies must be repeated and diffused gradually; 'three days before, three days after' is the classic change-management protocol.

Psychological lens

Resonates with the mere-exposure effect and the elaboration likelihood model of persuasion; lines 3 and 6 describe over-compliance and the loss of personal boundaries.
