Standstill

否

12. Standstill

pǐ; Stagnation

Judgment

Standstill: evil people do not further the perseverance of the noble. The great departs, the small approaches. Heaven and earth do not communicate.

Image

Heaven and earth do not unite: the image of standstill. The noble person falls back on inner worth to escape difficulties, and does not allow themself to be honoured with revenue.

Lines

  1. Line 1, yin (six)

When ribbon grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it, each according to its kind. Perseverance brings good fortune and success. Teams that keep their values together come through.

  2. Line 2, yin (six)

They bear and endure; this means good fortune for inferior people. The standstill serves to help the great person attain success. Don't drift with the current.

  3. Line 3, yin (six)

They bear shame. Gains wrongly obtained become disgrace: begin with self-examination.

  4. Line 4, yang (nine)

He who acts at the command of the highest remains without blame; those of like mind partake of the blessing. With legitimate mandate, the turn becomes possible.

  5. Line 5, yang (nine)

Standstill is giving way: good fortune for the great person. 'What if it should fail?' In this way he ties it to a cluster of mulberry shoots. Keep crisis-awareness even as things improve.

  6. Line 6, yang (nine)

The standstill comes to an end. First standstill, then good fortune. Actively break the deadlock.

In the enterprise

The hexagram of stagnation, broken communication and counter-cyclical strategy: market downturns, information blockages, hostile policy environments. Strategy: frugal virtue—control costs, protect the core, wait for and help create the turn.

Psychological lens

The opposite of learned helplessness: keep controllable behaviours in an uncontrollable environment. Line 5's 'what if it should fail?' is constructive crisis-awareness, not anxiety.
