Splitting Apart

剥

23. Splitting Apart

bō; Erosion

Judgment

It does not further one to go anywhere. Erosion rises from below; this is a time to protect, not to attack.

Image

The mountain rests on the earth: the image of splitting apart. Those above ensure their position only by giving generously to those below.

Lines

  1. Line 1, yin (six)

The leg of the bed is split. Those who persevere are destroyed: misfortune. Erosion begins at the base.

  2. Line 2, yin (six)

The bed is split at the edge. Misfortune. Erosion has reached middle management.

  3. Line 3, yin (six)

He splits with them: no blame. In a decaying group, keep your integrity and leave the clique.

  4. Line 4, yin (six)

The bed is split up to the skin: misfortune. The crisis now touches core people and assets.

  5. Line 5, yin (six)

A shoal of fishes. Favour comes through the court ladies. Everything furthers. Even in decline, organise resources and hearts in good order.

  6. Line 6, yang (nine)

There is a large fruit still uneaten. The noble person receives a carriage; the house of the inferior is split apart. The end of decay keeps the seed of renewal.

In the enterprise

The hexagram of decline, erosion and defending the floor: lost market share, talent drain, brand dilution, cultural corrosion. Strategy: 'give generously to those below'—strengthen foundations, protect core talent, and save the 'great fruit' (core capabilities) for the recovery.

Psychological lens

Resonates with blindness to gradual risk ('boiling frog') and normalcy bias; the uneaten fruit points to meaning-preservation in post-traumatic growth.
