恒
32. Duration
héng; Perseverance
Judgment
Success, no blame. Perseverance furthers. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. Duration is not stillness but holding direction within change.
Image
Thunder and wind: the image of duration. The noble person stands firm and does not change direction.
Lines
- Line 1, yin (six)
Seeking duration too hastily brings misfortune persistently; nothing furthers. Premature 'permanent commitments' are unstable.
- Line 2, yang (nine)
Remorse disappears. Measured, central conduct lasts naturally.
- Line 3, yang (nine)
He who does not give duration to his character meets with disgrace; persistent humiliation. Wavering values lose trust.
- Line 4, yang (nine)
No game in the field. Persisting in the wrong place yields nothing, however long.
- Line 5, yin (six)
Giving duration to one's character through perseverance: good fortune for a woman, misfortune for a man. Constancy depends on role: executors keep course, decision-makers adapt.
- Line 6, yin (six)
Restlessness as an enduring condition brings misfortune. 'Persistence' that keeps changing direction is the most dangerous.
In the enterprise
The hexagram of long-termism, continuity and strategic patience: long-term execution, brand consistency, century-old companies, personal habits. Line 4 is the key warning: persistence presupposes the right direction; persisting in the wrong hunting ground is mere stubbornness.
Psychological lens
Resonates with grit (Duckworth) and habit formation; line 4 names grit's dark side—over-persistence in unattainable goals (goal disengagement theory).
