Dispersion

涣

59. Dispersion

huàn; Dissolving and regathering

Judgment

Success. The king approaches his temple. It furthers one to cross the great water. Perseverance furthers. When hearts disperse, a shared spiritual symbol regathers them.

Image

The wind drives over the water: the image of dispersion. The ancient kings sacrificed to the Lord and built temples—faith and ritual regather hearts.

Lines

  1. Line 1, yin (six)

He brings help with the strength of a horse. Good fortune. At the first signs of dispersion, stop the loss with strong help.

  2. Line 2, yang (nine)

At the dissolution he hurries to that which supports him. Remorse disappears. Find a stable support.

  3. Line 3, yin (six)

He dissolves his self. No remorse. Put aside self-interest; join the larger whole.

  4. Line 4, yin (six)

He dissolves his bond with his group. Supreme good fortune. Dispersion leads in turn to accumulation. This is something ordinary people do not think of. Break up factions to form a greater whole.

  5. Line 5, yang (nine)

His loud cries are as dissolving as sweat. Dissolution! A king abides without blame. At the critical moment, issue a clear declaration and share the reserves.

  6. Line 6, yang (nine)

He dissolves his blood. Departing, keeping at a distance, going out, is without blame. Resolve conflict; move away from the source of harm.

In the enterprise

The hexagram of dispersion, culture rebuilding and breaking silos: post-merger integration, remote and distributed teams, departmental walls, regathering a brand. Line 4—'dissolve the group: supreme good fortune'—is the classic statement against factionalism: break the cliques to form a larger mountain.

Psychological lens

Resonates with recategorisation of social identity and Sherif's superordinate goals (Robbers Cave): a higher shared goal dissolves intergroup hostility.
