既济
63. After Completion
jì jì; Accomplished
Judgment
Success in small matters. Perseverance furthers. At the beginning good fortune, at the end disorder. Completion is precisely when new risks begin. All six lines are in their proper places—the most 'perfect' hexagram, and for that reason the one requiring most vigilance.
Image
Water over fire: the image of the condition after completion. The noble person takes thought of misfortune and arms themself against it in advance.
Lines
- Line 1, yang (nine)
He brakes his wheels. He gets his tail in the water. No blame. After success, slow down deliberately.
- Line 2, yin (six)
The woman loses the curtain of her carriage. Do not run after it; on the seventh day you will get it. Small losses after success need no chasing.
- Line 3, yang (nine)
The Illustrious Ancestor disciplines the Devil's Country. After three years he conquers it. Inferior people must not be employed. Consolidating gains takes long effort and reliable people.
- Line 4, yin (six)
The finest clothes turn to rags. Be careful all day long. Achievements decay: stay vigilant.
- Line 5, yang (nine)
The neighbour in the east who slaughters an ox does not attain as much real happiness as the neighbour in the west with his small offering. After success, simplicity and sincerity beat extravagance.
- Line 6, yin (six)
He gets his head in the water. Danger. Indulging in success—total immersion.
In the enterprise
The hexagram of after-success, project closure and 'preventing trouble before it arises': handover from project to operations, integration risk after a deal closes, post-IPO life, organisational inertia after goals are met. 'Good fortune at the start, disorder at the end': completion is not the finish line; 'think of misfortune and arm against it' is the master principle of all risk management.
Psychological lens
Resonates with the success trap and post-goal motivation drop; line 5 points to the hedonic treadmill and the satisfactions of simplicity.
